Original cabinet card on beige board. Black and white photograph. Text is in German. Board measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"; photograph measures 3 3/4" x 5 7/8." Cabinet card is very clean and intact with minimal age wear and two pieces of tape on back. Small black dot in upper-right corner of photograph. A fine copy. This is a beautiful photograph that shows the Great St. Martin Church in Cologne. The church features Romanesque architecture and has foundations that date back to 960 CE. While the church was severely damaged in World War II, restorations were made and completed in 1985. The church is currently being used by the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem and is open to the public. "Koln" (Cologne) is printed at the top. Rest of title printed beneath photograph. "Verlag v. Rommler & Jonas, K. S. Hof-Photogr., Dresden, 1892" printed at the bottom. Rommler & Jonas was a German art print shop and publishing company that was co-founded in 1871 by Emil Rommler (1842-1941), a photographer, and Leopold Erasmus Jonas (1839-?), an accountant. Rommler had received his photographic training from his father in Chemnitz and Joseph Albert in Munich. The company also employed other photographers and became well-known for its high-quality photographic prints called collotypes or albertypes which often depicted cityscapes.
