Buy this book on-line ORSON WELLES : Mr. Arkadin. A novelW.H.Allen, London, 1956
The first UK and first non-anonymous edition of the author's first and only novel. 8vo. 222pp. Brown cloth, lettered and ruled in black at the spine. A small area of light staining to the upper board, and the top- and fore edge lightly spotted. A narrow strip of light partial toning to the free endpapers. A very good copy the Peter Rudland-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped, but with a little chafing, creasing, edge-nicking, and dust soiling. A novel with a curious history, it was based on Greek Meets Greek, a 1951 episode of one of Welles' 'Third Man'-influenced 'The Lives of Harry Lime' radio series, and formed the basis for his film 'Confidential Report' (AKA 'Mr. Arkadin') (the "biggest disaster" of his life, according to Welles: various versions were released but he was given editorial control over none of them). Originally published anonymously in France in 1955, Welles denied having written a word of the book, although he was seen furiously typing up a novel whilst staying with the Olivier's in the summer of 1951. Peter Bogdanovich observed that some critics had said the writing was often beautiful to which Welles growled "Maybe I did write it at that").. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover.
