An unusual example with blank verso, either a loose leaf map which has been bound into one of the later editions (the plate shows the appropriate signs of wear) as a substitute for a leaf with text on the verso, or run-off from the original plate for a later edition which was perhaps never completed. After the death of Vrients in 1612 the Ortelius copper-plates passed into the hands of the Moretus brothers, Plantin’s successors, and it has been suggested that they issued editions of the Theatrum without text., Shirltey, British Isles, #86.
