LONDON.MACMILLAN,1980.

ISBN 0333294106.

UK,12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[An ex-public library edn which has had it's boards recased in pale blue cloth - as opposed to it's original yellow, and then cropped in size. The dw/dj has also been cropped to fit; with it's internal flaps removed and trimmed to fit - so no publisher's price and then sealed in a protective transparent cover with the endpapers pasted down over the cover's edges beneath.Approx size: 12mo - 198cm tall x 122cm wide - as opposed to UK,8vo original boards - and is also smaller in size than the US 1st edn.] NFINE/NFINE.Owner inscrptn (name) in blue ink to top corner of front pastedown. As an ex-public library example residue of red ink from library docket/ticket to front pastedown in the form of scattered red ink dots.To ffe, residue of removal of pasted-in said library docket/ticket and a small, red ink end of library stamp.Pastedowns would stand sympathetic replacement. The only other (assumed?) library notation is a black ink, single capital letter 'W' to reverse of the title page - no other library markings anywhere to or in the book - none to any edges or in text block, nor to dw/dj's spine/backstrip.Top edges+fore-edges both slight, light ageing with miniscule spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no tanning to block edges and no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - could be unread? Described hard, but fairly and honestly and is still an exceptional example of a particularly scarce and early Cadfael novel - albeit an ex-public library edn. Gervase Bonel, with his wife and servants,is a guest of Shrewsbury Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul when he is suddenly taken ill. Luckily, the Abbey boasts the services of clever and kindly Brother Cadfael,a skilled herbalist. Cadfael hurries to the man's bedside, only to be confronted by two very different surprises. In Master Bonel's wife, the good monk recognises Richildis, whom he loved many years ago before he took his vows. And Master Bonel has been fatally poisoned by a dose of deadly monk's-hood oil from Cadfael's herbarium. The Sheriff is convinced that the murderer is Richildis' son Edwin, who had reasons aplenty to hate his stepfather. But Cadfael, guided in part by his tender concern for a woman to whom he was once betrothed,is certain of her son's innocence.Using his knowledge of both herbs and the human heart,Cadfael deciphers a deadly recipe for murder . . . Past misdeeds find present and deadly reckonings in this the 3rd chronicle of Brother Cadfael,Ellis Peters' marvellously created medieval detective.
