Petronius: : Satyricon quae supersunt cum integris Doctorum Virorum Commentariis; & notis Nicolai Heinsii & Guilielmi Goesii antea ineditis [...] curante Petro Burmanno [...] editio altera [...]

2 vols in 1, 4to. pp. [lxxvi], 886, [ii], [viii], 408, [cxxxii]. With engraved frontispiece. Letterpress titles printed in red and black. Some light staining, mostly marginal. Contemporary Dutch prize vellum, gilt, arms of Gouda on the covers. Ownership inscription of A. Browne of St. John’s College, Cambridge, 1820.

The first of the excellent Burman editions of Petronius’ bawdy ancient novel was printed at Utrecht in 1709. Burman himself died in 1741 and the second edition offered here was prepared for the press by Burman’s son Caspar. Burman’s text was emended fairly haphazardly by J.J. Reiske, then a poverty stricken scholar eking out a meagre existence in Leiden. Reiske’s most brilliant achievements still lay before him, editing Greek authors after his return to Leipzig. The 1743 edition of Petronius does contain a considerable amount of new material, however, in terms of new readings from manuscripts and additional notes, which in many ways makes it preferable to the preceding one., Dibdin II, 276; Brunet IV, 575.
