The Newton Abbot to Kingswear Railway was and still is a great favourite with so many people, whether they are railway historians, enthusiasts, modellers or just holidaymakers travelling to their destinations in the West Country. The line is now part State owned from Newton Abbot to Paignton and privately run from Paignton to Kingswear by the Dart Valley Railway Company. Many of the line's "friends" came by train to Torquay,Paignton of Goodrington as children on holiday, and then,in turn, took their own children there.Others came to Dartmouth for its more peaceful attractions and inspiring scenery. This book is the first complete history of the line and the author has produced the most comprehensive coverage possible within the limits of this book. The proposals for he railway in this area were first mooted in 1844 and the continuous history of the line is charted up to the present day.In addition, the close association of the railway with the Kingswear coal trade and the Dartmouth ferries is fully recorded. A large mainly unpublished photographic section, including many "archive" illustrations, complements the text and there are also many maps, track layout plans and timetables included.
