A collection of over 200 essential album covers of the decade.A visual journey ranging from psychedelia-influenced artwork to Punk anti-design - from Pink Floyd to the Sex Pistols.Indispensable reading for the dedicated follower of album cover graphics and design.
The seventies were a mean, gloomy, dark and turbulent decade. In the US there was Vietnam and Watergate; in Britain, the dreamy, swinging sixties utopianism was replaced by inflation, discontent and strikes.Add to this rocketing worldwide inflation caused by the soaring cost of oil,Pol Pot's genocide in Cambodia,
Baader-Meinhof terrorism in West Germany and there was little room for optimism.
In the midst of this post-sixties,back-to-reality political and economic climate, the world of record
cover design was not unaffected.Yet,through this bleakness, artists and designers produced images of startling intensity and originality.
From the price-is-no-object philosophy of the supergroups,to the backstreet cut-and-paste techniques of punk iconographers, album covers continued to entertain, inform, repel and seduce,
occasionally all at the same time.Who can look at The
Mothers of Convention's 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh' without feeling repulsed yet thrilled at the brashness and vitality of the image? And what is the significance and coded meaning of all the activity in
Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here'? Not much doubt about Andy Warhol's conception of the Stones' 'Sticky
Fingers'. . . . 'CLASSIC ALBUM COVERS OF THE 70s' is an essential collection of over 200 of the very best album covers produced during tht dark decade. From the Grateful Dead,Roxy Music and David Bowie,to Patti Smith,The Ramones and the Sex Pistols, this volume will prove indispensable to all interested in the history of album cover graphics and design, and to those whose memories of the seventies are stirred by the record covers of the time.
Richard Evans has been involved with the visual side of the music industry for more than 20 years. He has designed album covers for artists as diverse as Public Image Limited and Robert Plant. His association
with The Who,which began in 1976 with a nude photo session with Keith Moon, has continued through to 1994
with the design of the box set The Who: Thirty Years of Maximum R&B.

videos for artists such as Paul Young,Robert Plant and Yes.In 1985 Aubrey began Aubrey Powell Productions and expanded into television commercials,
