Original hand-drawn political cartoon by Newton Pratt for The Sacramento Bee newspaper. Comes with a beige mat on top with a window showing the art panel. Signed "Newton Pratt" in black ink at the lower-left corner of the illustrated panel. Also inscribed in green ink pen at the lower-right corner of the mat is the following: "To Francis--with best regards, Newt Pratt, 7-23-56." Handwritten caption in pencil above the artist's inscription says, "'Ahoy,' The McClatchy Newspapers of California, July 18, 1956." Original black ink and black and white crayon on beige paper. July 18, 1956. Matboard measures 13 1/2" x 18 1/2." Cartoon panel (size of mat window) measures 10 1/4" x 11 1/2." Art and matboard are very clean and intact with minimal age wear. This is a single-panel political cartoon. The panel shows what looks like a 19th-century-style paddlewheeler or paddle steamer with the name, Cotton Blossom. "Showboat" is strung between the ship's two funnels or chimneys. A man holding a collapsed tent that says, "Big Top," waves farewell to the ship. This cartoon commemorates the closing of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus for that year. Newton Pratt (1901-1985) was an American cartoonist and engineer. He was The Sacramento Bee's editorial cartoonist from 1938-1971. Pratt was also a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work at the newspaper. Pratt was succeeded by Dennis Renault (b. 1936), who would become another longtime and accomplished cartoonist at The Sac Bee.. Comic. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
