Fillmore: Although not blessed with brilliance, charisma, or dramatic flair, he could nonetheless be eloquent, such as in his compelling plea to Congress to effect a compromise that would thwart the secession of the southern states. When Congress responded, the President signed the Compromise of 1850 into law. The measure postponed civil war for more than a decade. Although unexplained and unfortunate, most of the official papers of Fillmore's administration were destroyed. What remained, the author, Robert J. Rayback, was able to piece together to give documented substance to Fillmore and his three years in office. Rayback's portrayal lauds Fillmore's astuteness and assays his faults. One professor concludes from the book that "without Fillmore there could have been no Lincoln." A historical book. Leather bound and very collectible.
