Remarks on the Proposed State Constitution, by a Free-Soiler from the Start

Crosby, Nichols, & Company, Boston, MA, 1853

Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Formerly bound by string at center along spine but string has snapped. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/2" x 9." Thirty-five pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact overall but are loose, have a closed tear (measuring 1 1/2" from spine; not affecting text) on first page, and have moderate darkening on front, back, and along page edges. A Very Good copy. This is a speech given by an anonymous Congressman, a member of the Free-Soil Party, who is discussing proposals to the Massachusetts State Constitution. The Congressman organizes his discussion of the Massachusetts Constitution by the state's main governing entities including the Massachusetts States Senate, Massachusetts House of Representatives, Massachusetts Judiciary, and Massachusetts executive branch. The Congressman is particularly critical of the current system governing proportional representation in the Massachusetts House. Much of the Congressman's speech is about organizing the structure of Massachusetts's government. The last page briefly discussing the Free-Soil Party and the issue of slavery. The Free-Soil Party was made expressly to "discourage" slavery.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
