'This monumental work is divided in three Parts, and includes a total of 197 species found in Tropical Africa, Arabia, Socotra and Madagascar. Part 1 comprises the classification etc. of the 152 species found in Tropical Africa, Arabia and Socotra, while Part 2 is devoted to the 45 species in Madagascar. Part 3 is a small section dealing with species imperfectly known, named hybrids, names without status etc. Under each species is give the name, author, synonymy, full description based mostly on the plants as they grow wild, herbarium material, type locality, variation and distribution, native names and legends, medicinal uses, distinguishing characteristics and other notes of general interest. There are no less than 106 colour plates - almost all are of plants in their natural habitats. In addition every species in illustrated in black and white. Individual flowers from bud to post-pollination stages are reproduced natural size. There are also 560 black and white figures.' from the original prospectus.
