First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 312pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine with a blind-stamped floral design to the boards, and ornate blind stamped bordering to the upper board. Illustrated with one map, a title-page decoration and numerous endearing line drawings in the text by Christopher Sykes. Top edge dust marked with a small area of light staining. Some quite light sporadic spotting throughout. The binding cracked at the title page with a slant to binding. Contemporary former owner name and date (1939) inked to the head of the front free endpaper. An inkstamp to the copyright page states that this as the 'Empire Edition . supplied for sale only in India, the Dominions and the Colonies"; this stamp was added after the book was produced so it is in no way different to the non-colonial edition. A good copy in about a good example of the most uncommon dust wrapper featuring two further Sykes drawings. The wrapper is non-price-clipped (7/6 net) but with some considerable toning to the spine panel, a small area of staining, and a slit and some resulting tenderness to the natural front panel spine panel fold. About an inch of loss from the base of the spine panel impacts the imprint lettering, and there are several further small fractions of edge-loss. Byron's only novel, jointly penned with his 'Road to Oxiana' travelling companion Sykes under their 'Waughburton' pseudonym.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Fair
