Carter & Pollard [129, 247-250] state that in this forgery certain letters of the type were not cut until after1880; Baughman (p. 97) gives date as 1877. All three items have same line-for-line set-up. Thomas J. Wise was an English book collector and biographer who became known for literary forgeries and stolen documents that were resold or authenticated by him. Wise chose his writers with care. All were notable talents whose work could be expected to prized for years - centuries. Robert Louis Stevenson was particularly favored by Wise because the poet-author was notoriously uninterested in his own works after they were published.
