The author's detailed knowledge of Dartmoor in the early nineteenth century and his use of factual places and some factual characters, make this a truly historical novel. We are introduced to Tom Tremain, a young Cornish miner, who arrives on Dartmoor looking for work, and Mary Ann, a Dartmoor farmer's daughter living at Classywell. The two are destined to remain devoted to each other throughout the many turbulent problems life besets them. Tom finds work at Ellisborough Mine, which is brought to life in this book, just as it was almost two centuries ago.
Everything is going well, with a developing relationship between Tom and Mary Ann, when the fate of the couple is to be completely altered at the hands of the rough, burly, Jethro. The events leading from his savage attack on the couple and the subsequent illegitimate baby borne by Mary Ann are to effect them more than either could possibly suspect.Retribution leads to a spell on board the terrible prisoner-of-war hulks in the Hamoaze at Plymouth. Here we see the dark side of life for criminals of the day.Eventually the couple marry and have children of their own;with Tom now working at Foggin Tor Quarry and unaware of the illegitimate child, the fate of which only Mary Ann knew.Ultimately, however, events from the past are inevitably linked to the present and the final twist of fate is to leave its mark forever on the peaceful Dartmoor setting.
