Hardback, 7" x 8", first edition, very good condition, no dust-jacket as published, publisher's original illustrated boards - lightly rubbed, spine slightly faded, eps slightly foxed, 22 pages text (English and Afrikaans) plus 88 b/w line drawings-------A portfolio of Egersdörfer's often humorous sketches of life in South Africa in the 1880's and 1890's, with captions and an introduction in both English and Afrikaans. 'It is very much to the credit of South Africans that in recent years they have shown such great interest and pride in the early artists of their country - among whom Thomas Bowler occupies the place of honour - that prices of paintings have been rising sky-high and that even reproductions enjoy increasing popularity. So far, however, Heinrich Egersdörfer remains a strange exception to this enthusiasm. Although he is one of the most amusing artists who ever lived in our midst, and although the charm of his work is a revelation to the newcomer, to nine out of ten of us his very name is unknown. In Germany, his land of birth, however, his name is unknown in art circles - From Eric Rosenthal's introductory sketch. Scenes from the "South African Illustrated News include one of his first and most characteristic drawings, "Scenes at " in the Orange Free State, giving a lively idea of a little dorp at "Nagmaal" time, "Convicts on the Road to Hout Bay", the Outspan at Malmesbury, with the Boland village gleaming in the heat of summer.'
