Dorothy married James Armand de Rothschild at the age of 17 in 1913. He was 35 years old, the son of Edmond James de Rothschild of the Paris branch of the Rothschild family. In 1922 James de Rothschild inherited Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire which became their country home. After his death in 1957, Waddesdon Manor was bequeathed to the National Trust, but the surrounding estate and small mansion at Eythrope in Buckinghamshire were retained by Mrs. de Rothschild. She remained a strong influence on the preservation and development of the house and collections at Waddesdon. At her death in 1988 she left 94 Million Pounds, which was the largest probated estate in England at that date. Her book charts the story of Waddesdon Manor, built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1870's in the style of a 16th century French chateau. Filled with the magnificent and varied works of art the Baron collected throughout his life and embellished with carved wood panelling from old Parisian houses. Dying as a childless widower, the Baron was succeeded by his youngest sister, Alice, who continued to run Waddesdon in the tradition established by her brother.
