The Tournament of Roses, also known as the Rose Parade or Tournament of Roses Parade, was first held in 1890. Charles Frederick Holder, a naturalist, conservationist, and author, first thought of the idea for the parade in 1889 and shared it with Francis F. Rowland. For Holder, a significant part of the parade's appeal was that it could take on New Year's Day due to Pasadena's year-round balmy weather. Rowland then brought the idea to members of the Valley Hunt Club who accepted it with great enthusiasm. The Rose Parade is still held annually on January 1.. Book.
