Fascinating autobiographical account of Albert Schweitzer about his return to Hopital Albert Schweitzer (Hospital Albert Schweitzer) which he had built in 1913 with his wife, Helene, in the forests along the Ogooue River in Lambarene, Gabon, Africa. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was an Alsatian-German "Renaissance man" who worked in a variety of disciplines. He was a theologian, physician, humanitarian, philosopher, organist, musicologist, and author. He won the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, which included his work at the hospital, and for his philosophy called "Reverence of Life." In the opening pages of this book, Schweitzer writes that he chose to build a hospital because there were no doctors or hospitals in Gabon (formerly part of French Equatorial Africa) at the time. Schweitzer chose to build the hospital where he did because it was at the nexus of the Ogooue's many tributaries, so it was more easily accessible. Schweitzer's account addresses the rebuilding of the hospital after it fell into disrepair following his leave of absence induced by exhaustion and tropical anemia. Schweitzer ran the hospital until his passing in 1965. Hopital Albert Schweitzer is still open to this day.. Book. Book Condition: Near Fine.
