Color woodcuts for a calendar. 8 5/8 x 12 inches. Mildred Estelle "Stell" (Beehner) Shevis was born on July 1, 1915 in Hartford, Connecticut. William Shevis emigrated from Scotland in 1928 at age 14. He studied at the Massachusetts School of Art. He and his wife, Stell, moved to Me. in 1945. They were part of a group that formed Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Additionally, they were co-founders of Me. Coast Artists Association, now the Center for Me. Contemporary Art. His work has been shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.Stell and Shevis (each known by one name, her by her first and he by his last) lived together and worked together as artists for more than 70 years, until his death in 2010.
