Collection of two original materials related to Lydia Sigourney, namely, a portrait engraving and a signature on card. The engraving is a black-and-white portrait illustration of Sigourney, "[e]ngraved by G. Parker from a Painting by James Herring." Below the portrait is a printing of her name, "Lydia Huntley Sigourney," and a facsimile signature, "L. H. Sigourney." The signature on card was signed and dated in black ink and reads, "Lydia Huntley Sigourney, Hartford, Connt., July 9th, 1859." Engraving: 9 1/2" x 11 1/2." Printed area (portrait): 3 1/2" x 4 1/4." Signature on card: 4" x 2 1/2." Engraving and signature on card are very clean and intact overall. Engraving has moderate age toning and foxing that is mostly, if not entirely, limited to the margins. The signature on card is very clean and intact except for light age toning and a small smudge near the right edge. The engraving and signature are each Very Good and Very Good as a set. Lydia Huntley Sigourney (1791-1865) was an American poet, author, and publisher. In her career, she published fifty-two books and over 300 periodicals. Among the recurring themes in Sigourney's poetry are religion, responsibility, life's transience, and patriotism.
