STOUT, Rex : Too Many Cooks. UK FIRST EDITION

1938

Collins Crime Club. London. 1938. First edition, UK. No DW. Orange hardback. Has recipe section at rear on blue paper. Edges of pages and endpapers foxed, small "Times Book Club" stamp to rear pastedown. Spine sunned and mottled, margins of boards faded otherwise a clean and sound copy of one of the first detective books to include recipes! SCARCE. Throughout his long career, Wolfe's appetite for food, drink and justice never flagged. The hard cover edition of the fifth novel, Too Many Cooks (1938) cemented that link, with Wolfe at one point lecturing fifteen of the world's greatest chefs on American cooking, and even boasted recipes at the rear, while the pivotal banquet has been cited by Nora Ephron and others as the "best meal in English literature."
