This is the gripping autobiographical account by Christian Swanljung (also, Kristian Svanljung; 1892-1964), a Finnish author, about his trials and tribulations in Siberia and Central Asia. Swanljung's story comes at the nexus of historical events such as World War I and the Russian Revolution. Swanljung had moved to St. Petersburg to work as bank clerk and businessman during World War I. However, beginning in the spring of 1918, Swanljung traveled to other places such as Siberia, Mongolia, and Afghanistan. In the fall of 1919, Swanljung joined Alexander Kolchak's army to fight against the Bolsheviks' Red Army. Kolchak's army ultimately retreated from the Urals into Siberia, but Swanljung became injured and contracted cholera. Swanljung subsequently fled from Kolchak's army in December 1919 and hid with the Bolsheviks but was taken as a German prisoner of war in Siberia around 1920. In 1924, Swanljung finally left Siberia through the Mongolian border. Swanljung recounts many episodes from his life during this tumultuous time period in the 1910s and 1920s. Lewis Stanton Palen (1878-1960), who collaborated with Swanljung for this book, was an American author and translator.. Book. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hardcover.
