In this important study Professor Tapié shows how the style called Baroque was born, how it developed from the classical architecture of the Renaissance and flowered in Italy, under the genius of Bernini and Borromini. He then traces its diffusion throughout Europe. laying stress on such significant events as Bernini's visit to Paris in 1665. The apparent incompatibility between the classical genius of the French and the audacities of Baroque has given rise to misapprehensions about the nature of French Baroque, and on this Professor Tapié is particularly illuminating. To the original French edition he has added a new chapter on England, showing how Inigo Jones, Wren, Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor interpreted the new style. Concluding this account is a glance at the Baroque style in Russia, Mexico and South America. **** NOT EX LIB **** **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.26 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST ****. 23.
