Original advertisement for a book, Literary Industries, written by Hubert Howe Bancroft, published by Harper & Brothers, and sold by the Bancroft Company. Printed as a flyer on beige paper. No date, circa 1891. 4" x 6 1/2." One page, complete. Pages are very clean and intact overall except a few wrinkles, a small closed tear at the bottom edge, and a small piece missing from the upper-right corner. The closed tear barely affects text. The missing corner did not included any text. This ad promotes Hubert Howe Bancroft's memoir, Literary Industries. Descriptions, pricing, and testimonials are given. Excerpt: "This fascinating volume give, in autobiographical form, an account, from inception to completion, of the remarkable historical efforts of the author in western North America, the collecting and indexing of his library, and the plans pursued in writing his history." Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was an American historian, publisher, bookseller, and ethnologist who published and collected books on British Columbia, Central America, and the western states of the U.S. including California, Texas, and Alaska. Bancroft had a vision to donate his personal library of approximately 60,000 books for the benefit of scholars. That vision was realized when the Bancroft Library, which is named after him, at UC Berkeley was founded in 1905 upon the acquisition of his book collection.. Ephemera.
