Original billhead on blue paper with printed text and handwriting in black ink. Datelined September 16, 1859 in Providence, Rhode Island. Billhead measures 7 3/4" x 3 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact. Paper has very slight wrinkling and a few vertical fold lines. A Fine Copy. The handwritten portions include the name of the buyer, the item(s) purchased or services rendered, the price of the item(s) or service, and acknowledgment of the buyer's payment. The printed text reads, "The Commercial Steamship Company, For Transportation of [Mdze.?] from New-York to Providence, per Steamer Albatross. Not responsible for contents of Cases of Books and Shoes unless stipeed with iron or wood. Leakage of Liquors, in all cases, at owner's risk. No damage allowed unless notified before the goods leave the Company's Pier. Commercial Steamboat Co. Agents, B. Buffum, Providence; Isaac Odell, Pier 11 N. R., New York." The items shipped are listed as "10 [...] goods." Isaac Harrison Southwick (1811-1903) was an American entrepreneur and politician from Grafton, Massachusetts, though much of his career was spent in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1851, Southwick, as General Superintendent of Providence, made a contract with other parties to make a line of freight steamers traveling between Providence and New York. Thus, this marked the founding of the Commercial Steamship Company, which was the first of its kind to travel between Providence and New York. The Commercial Steamship Company had many successors including the Neptune Steamship Company, the Merchants' Steamship Company, the Providence and New York Steamship Company, and the Providence and Stonington Steamship Company.
