His country occupies about a quarter of the total area of Uganda, and contains nearly half of its total population. In 1966 he was forced to flee from his palace, then under siege by the troops of Milton Obote, and this book opens with his escape to England. He had been there before; first, in 1946 for two years at Cambridge and eighteen months in the Grenadier Guards; and again in 1953 for two years of exile following the troubles caused by British plans for a unified Uganda. After the hair-raising story of his flight from his blazing palace, the Kabaka recounts the story of his country in a long flash-back, beginning with his great-grandfather Mutesa I welcoming the Victorian explorer Speke on his quest for the source of the Nile. Later chapters deal lucidly, and often wittily, with the subsequent history of his country up to the present day, the intense loyalty displayed by his people towards him, and his own identification with their precarious destiny.
