THEVENOT, Melchisedech : Description de la partie des Indes

355 x 275 mm., in fine recent wash colour, in very good condition.

This rare unusual map of northern India features the Mogul Empire. It is derived from William Baffin's map published in 1619. That was drawn from the travels of Sir Thomas Roe, Ambassador to the Mogul Court. The map is attractively engraved by J. de Bis with the major river systems from the Himalayas dominating the region. The major cities are located and the tree-lined road from Lahor to Agra (Delhi) is prominently depicted. Top right is the insignia of the Mogul Emperor consisting of two rings. The first encloses a lion facing the east which partially obscures the sun. That below depicts the Mogul genealogy, in nine circles concluding with Jehangir. The map was included in Melchisedec Thevenot's "Relations de Divers Voyages Curieux" first published in 1663. The greatest collection of travel accounts published at the time. Gole, S. (India) no. 10; Moreland & Bannister p.131; Sabin 95333.
