American Zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid's personal set of Pennant's British Zoology. Including many field notes and drawings, many new classifications listed in order of Linneaus in pencil in the appropriate location, usually on the rear of the plate of that species. These classifications are penciled in throughout the volumes in either opposite the engraved plates or lightly penciled notations of the opposite pages, notes do not affect engravings (too numerous to mention here - all newly listed classifications?). Many field notes and written observations throughout the volumes, (see photos). OOAK. Also included are four of Kofoid's infamous bookplates. (see photo) The exquisite armorial bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid is very interesting and well-known among collectors. The upper left end of the bookplate; the campanile (bell tower) seen outside the window is the one on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Kofoid was one of the leading investigators in protozoology and limnology, and was the developer of what came to be known as the Kofoid Bucket, a device used in the collection of planktonic samples. (seen in the lower portion of the bookplate). Volume I: 59 Engraved Plates including fold-out plate "Explanation of Technical Terms",Newspaper clippings (1798-1830) laid in according to species, notes from Trinity College, Cambridge, and Tipped-in Hand Drawings accordingly inserted adhering to Linnaeus classification. Newspaper clipping about breeding in Lincolnshire dated 1800 laid in. eaflets regarding butchery, handwritten letter with wax seal, newspaper clippings and field notes/sketches laid in rear of the volume. Sheet Music (fold-out), "Composition for Two Piping Bulfinches". Volume III: 73 Engraved Plates including 2 fold-out plates; "Explanation of Technical Terms", "Electric Ray" . Unique to this set, Very well done inked painting "Salmon Male", noted in pencil "drawn from a plate from Bloch's Octavo Edition". (tipped in). Field notes from 1796 laid in place. Volume IV: Pressed flower on title page. 93 Engraved Plates. In Plate No. 44 is included three etchings of Mytilus, from Weymouth: A New Species. Opposite page 62 is a hand-drawn ink painting by Rev. Greenwood [St. Giles-Cripplegate/Chaplain to the company of Coopers]**. Referencing Borlase's Natural History of Cornwall, Trinity College, Cambridge, dated 1803 (hand-written), tipped into the volume at the location adhering to Linneaus classification.. In the rear of the book are laid in numerous hand-written notes on snails (dated 1707), birds and other observations and classifications, including a hand-written drawing/diagram, a letter (dated 1794) regarding a field observation.
