Arthur Paul Hogarth (b.1917).Works as Paul Hogarth.Born Kendal,Cumbria,son of a maste butcher and farmer.Studied at Manchester College of Art (1933-36) and at St. Martin's School of Art,London (1938-40).Worked as assistant to James Boswell (1946-48).Lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1950-54),senior lecturer at Cambridge School of Art (1959-61),tutor at the Royal College of Art (1965-71) and visiting lecturer there (1971-82). Since 1954,when he visited China,he has worked as an artist-reporter and social commentator,as well as illustrating Victorian classics and contemporaray works of fiction.A specialist in architectural history,he has worked for the US National Trust,the National Geographic Society Book Service and the Smithsonian Publishing Task Force,and has written and illustrated a series of guide books on American cities.During the 1950's and 60's,he worked mainly in charcoal or very soft pencil on high quality paper,but more recently much of his work has been in colour,and he has made lithographic prints.Hogarth considers that his work lies 'within the peculiarly English tradition of topographical drawing or watercolour blended with caricature,' and feels that travel has played a decisive part in the formation of his style and methods.He acknowledges the influence (at various times) of the Victorian illustrator Arthur Boyd Houghton (on whom he published a monograph in 1982),James Boswell and Ronald Searle,a close friend with whom he travelled widely in post-war Europe.Doctor of the Royal College of Art; elected ARA (1973),FSIA,RDI (1979).Prize-winner in the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for 1982.A Royal Academician since 1984 and awarded the OBE in 1989.
