Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age. It is only the minimal exterior fault that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite that,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness and brightness and lack of any damage.
The story of Esteban Lucas Bridges, whom the Indians called Lanooshwaia,Man from Woodpecker Creek,is one of unsurpassed courage.Born and raised in the regions near Cape Horn, among a tribe of canoe Indians with whom he hunted, fished and sailed the stormy seas,he became the first white man ever to cross Fireland and penetrate into the domain of the feared Ona Indians who later made him a blood brother and looked upon him as their Chief.
Written by the author of Tschiffely's Ride, who has met and talked with the subject, the material for this life-story is drawn from E. Lucas Bridges' own autobiography,'Uttermost Parts of the Earth',and from additional notes and sources - stories of his which were not included here. This title believed to be have been published posthumously,as its not listed amongst his lifetime's written or published other five travel titles.Along with the rare 1933 edition of 'Tschiffely's Ride',this seems another SCARCE and overlooked title of his.
Ten days before Christmas 1953,Aimé Tschiffely,
the most influential equestrian travel writer of the 20th century, was admittred into the Mile End Hospital in London for a minor operation. He died unexpectedly on 5th January,1954,due to complications related to the surgery.
Ever the traveller,Aimé had one more journey to make: his ashes were sent to his beloved Argentina, where they rest near the memorial for his horses on the El Cardal ranch.
In 1999 the Argentine Congress passed a law celebrating 20th September of each year as the “Día Nacional del Caballo” (National Day of the Horse) - the day Aimé arrived in New York in 1928.
