Original tax stamp on green paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with sixteen triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact overall. A few wrinkles. Some of the holes overlap and resemble tears (several of the holes near and on the left edge). Most of text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is a an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in red is the stamp number. Printed in blue is the year "1875" and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). The stamp has fill-in sections. Only one line has handwriting, the signature of "A. G. Sharpe," who was listed as a collector in an official United States government report titled, An Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of the United States for the Fiscal Year Ending June 20, 1876. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactures Tobacco Special Tax for April 1876." and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed at the bottom: "5 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
