Original tax stamp on orange paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with three triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact. Subtle horizontal fold line at center. A Fine copy. Text and illustrations are printed in black ink including the year "1880" and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). "USIR" watermark. In the center at the top is an illustration of a Mercury holding a caduceus, seating around a variety of kegs, barrels, and vessels containing alcoholic drinks. Printed in blue is the stamp number. The stamp has fill-in sections. Three lines are filled in with the signature of the tax collector, "W. Bruce[?]," and two stamps in purple ink. The purple stamps read, "4" (for District 4) and "MD" (for the state of Maryland). Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for April 1881." and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed at the bottom: "25 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
