Here is a novel so topical as it is ambitious, for David Unwin's theme is Africa, the whole imbroglio - racial, political, cultural - of Africa today (then - the early 50s).Set in an imaginary British protectorate and an adjoining republic.Though Bandaland and Equatoria will not be found on the map, they are no Erewhons invented by the author. The story of a conflict between the native peoples and a financial trust that wishes to build an irrigation project. Brilliantly characterised are the well-intentioned 'Fabian' English administrators, the white men determined to keep the African in his place, the Africans prepared to collaborate with the British in the fundamental work of health and education, and Africans who repudiate the white man and his ways with such intensity that they are ready to turn to sinister organisations and beliefs such as those of the Mau Mau. Pseudonymously writes as David Severn for his children's fiction books.See my book IDs' rja901520-rja901820 for various UK, 1st edn and other examples.
