Disbound: original paper boards are present but lacking the backstrip; and, the bookblock is split in several places. Ex-library; nineteenth-century bookplate on front pastedown and a small blind-stamped seal on the t.p., and no other marks. Very light dust-soiling to a couple of pages, and scant foxing to frontisp. and t.p., else very clean within. A scarce title, it is offered as is. Andrew Ure (b. Scotland, 1878; d. England, 1857), was a pioneer in teaching chemistry to artisans. His interest in the application of science to the arts and industry bore fruit in his Dictionary of Science. The work was originally undertaken at the request of the publishers as a revision of William Nicholson's Dictionary of Chemistry, but Ure said that so much of the latter was obsolete that the work had to be rewritten.
