Potted, factual accounts of some of the heroic lives and exploits led by German pilots in WWI,such as Manfred von Richthofen,Max Immelmann,Oswald Boelcke, Lieut. Eschwege,Captain Ritter von Schleich and Captain Gohring (sic) who was to lead the Luftwaffe in WWII.The book also contains some of the lesser-known but equally resourceful colleagues, such as Rudolph von Eschwege and Hans Shuz, taking part in furious battles in the sky and close escapes on the ground when brought down on the wrong side of the lines. 'German War Birds' contains some of the earliest information to appear after the war about air combat in the Middle East and Russia,as well as the Western Front, and about the significance of observation balloons as targets that were viciously attacked. A quite remarkable relationship grew up between British and German fliers during the 1914-18 war.Perhaps it grew from the innate admiration they had for each other's skill, perhaps from the fact that as flying was still in its infancy, both sides were fighting the fates as much as each other. But whatever the reason, the two sides treated each other with a respect and geniality which today we find very difficult to understand.Captured enemy fliers were feted and treated as comrades; Von Richthofen, killed in action, lay in state behind British lines like a deceased monarch. This book explores the unique relationship between two enemies, illustrates it with a series of fascinating stories and gives us an intimate picture of the lives of the fliers, both British and German, during those war years.
