Post 1950, vintage Shanghai advertising poster. Tin end strips. The soft, faded lines, intricate detailing, and the proportions of these Chinese posters might look strange to contemporary western eyes, particularly because advertising design has trended towards the minimalist. These posters are an unprecedented fusion of oriental and occidental styles. Clearly they were heavily influenced by Chinese art from the late 19th century and Art Nouveau & Art Deco. Shanghai, already a huge international economic center in the 1920's, was ground zero for these varied and often risqué advertisements. Originally intended as ephemeral promotions for the vast array of products that flooded China's newly opened economy, these ads have had a lasting influence in the region, still seen in some ways today. Pre-ww2 Shanghai posters are as distinct a genre as anything that came out of Europe from the 1880's through the 1930's. Unconventional and sloppy by Western standards, these unique works of advertising art are nevertheless a cultural treasure, not just for China, but the entire world. A nice poster in nice condition. Approx.31"x19.5". Poster. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
