Original map of Loch Maree and the Dingwall and Skye Railway in Scotland. Map is in black-and-white with light brown shading to depict places of elevation. Printed map area has a polygonal shape similar to a square with its lower-right corner taken out. No date, circa 1890s. 11" x 9." Map has vertical and horizontal fold lines, which may be original. Formerly in a book, a possible folding map. Map is very clean and intact except for a few wrinkles, slight age toning, and some tearing limited to left margin (from where map may have been attached to book). A Very Good copy. Map shows Loch Maree and the Dingwall and Skye Railway. The Dingwall and Skye Railway opened in 1870 with the principal aim of bringing transportation services to the town of Skye and the Hebrides. The railway was replaced by the Highland Railway in 1880, but the line (with the exception of the Strathpeffer Branch) is still open to this day. Cities, routes, and natural features are shown. Neatline included. Engraved by W. & A. K. Johnston, an engraving firm founded in 1826 by brothers William Johnston (1802-1888) and Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) in Scotland. Published by the famous publishing company, A. & C. Black, which was founded in 1807 by Adam Black (1784-1874) in Edinburgh. A. & C. Black is still in business to this day.. Map.
