W.R.BURNETT : Little Caesar. A novel

Lincoln MacVeagh, The Dial Press, New York, 1929

First edition (first printing) of the author's first crime novel, and the basis for the 1931 film of the same name, one of the first fully-fledged gangster films and the vehicle which shot a then-unknown Edward G.Robinson to stardom. 8vo. 308pp. Blue cloth lettered in yellow at the spine and upper board and with a small blind-stamped decoration. Boards rubbed and chafed, and the cloth sunned at the backstrip and gently fraying at the spine ends. Hinges just a little tender. Some quite light staining to one text leaf. Quite a good bight copy. No dust wrapper. Inpart inspired by the characters Burnett encountered whilst working as a night clerk in a seedy Chicago hotel, the author was nevertheless incensed by the screenwriter's decision to depict the title character as a closeted homosexual, which is a shame as that now stands as one of the more interesting aspects of the movie.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
