Stephanus Burridge,Spies (1930- 2008) After leaving Pretoria Boys High School in 1946, Professor Stephanus Burridge Spies went to the University of the Witwatersrand where he obtained a Master of Arts in History (1963), on the topic of the 1914 Rebellion. Burridge returned to Boys High in 1952 and taught History for 15 years. It was during this time that he played cricket for Northern Transv l (1951/2-1962/3), chalking up just over a thousand runs in 60 innings. In addition he represented the Transv l in Hockey. He obtained a PhD from Wits in 1974. After leaving Boys High as a teacher Burridge joined the staff of the University of South Africa, where he stayed until his retirement in 1995. It was during his tenure at UNISA that he wrote his celebrated work on the Anglo-Boer War: Methods of Barbarism.
