First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 99 pages. Retrospective collection of the artist's paintings on subject. One of Andy Warhol's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Andy Warhol and Springer Verlag: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial black cloth boards with art and titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Essay by Dr. Kurt Benirschke, one of the world's leading animal pathologists and conservationists. This is genuinely a fruitful collaboration between artist and scientist; the text by Benirschke is indispensable. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Berlin, Germany to the highest standards. In matching pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Andy Warhol's "Vanishing Animals". The Complete Vanishing Species Series, one of the great artist's last projects. He began with ten prints, collectively called "Endangered Species". This definitive volume contains sixteen new prints, which represent some of the artist's finest work towards the end of his life. The Vanishing Animals include the gazelle, the Galapagos tortoise, the Puerto Rican parrot, the mouse armadillo, and the Mongolian wild horse, among other wondrously beautiful disappearing creatures. Warhol's adroit use of the silk-screen process and unsurpassed mastery of color are in full force here, worthy of his being called in his lifetime the greatest colorist in the Western tradition since Matisse (matched since then only by Howard Hodgkin, the greatest abstract painter of our time). But his color virtuosity is deployed elegiacally, as an act of mourning: The portraits permanently "captured" these endangered species just before they finally disappeared. An absolute "must-have" title for Andy Warhol collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color prints. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANDY WARHOL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 354096410X.
