"Printed for the American Unitarian Association." This pamphlet contains a sermon that was originally given by Reverend Robert C. Waterston (c. 1812-1893), an American Unitarian minister based in Boston, Massachusetts. Waterston begins his sermon by describing the final hours of Jesus Christ's time on Earth. He contrasts the steadfast conviction of Christ and the erring ways of Judas. Waterston focuses on the verse from Scripture, "Watch and pray," to convey his main message of leaning into the power of prayer and to remain ever watchful of the temptations of sin. Of sin, Waterston explains that it is deceitful in terms of outward appearances. He remarks, "Vice may be fashionable, error popular. .... We must pierce through the deceitful covering, and feel that it is as bad to follow a multitude to do evil, as to do it alone, that the vote of the majority cannot make wrong right, or the enactment of a civil law, annul the immutable laws of God." Waterston also says that one must watch out for sin as it affects the inward nature of the mind or self-deception. He elaborates, "It is astonishing how the mind will at times bewilder and deceive itself. How some will artfully persuade themselves that they are following the right, when they are pursuing the wrong ...." Waterston emphasizes the need to put on the armor of God to resist and fight against sin and worldly temptations. Waterston concludes his sermon by highlighting the need to pray. He says a Christian may hypothetically be faultless and do many good deeds, but should that Christian not pray and commune with God through prayer, he says that something is wanting in spiritual life of said Christian..
