In our design-conscious age,William Morris (1834-96) - designer,craftsman,theorist, father-figure of an international
movement and for thirty years the centre of a group of architects, designers and artists - rouses curiousity in those who have begun to discover his work and ideas and the desire for reappraisal in those to whom they have long been familiar.
In this important study,Ray Watkinson considers three apects of Morris: as individual playing his part in a large development; as working designer; and as theorist about art and its function in society.Morris's theories influenced his successors who produced, and continue to produce, designs orientated upon function in terms of human usage. They have become increasingly unlike his in style, but they
fulfil the requirements set out in his lectures. His ideas and lectures have probably exerted the greatest influence in
the realms of architecture, town planning and printing; but there few areas of design
from which his mark is absent.Morris the poet,Morris the social propagandist, find
only a small and incidental place here;for
this is a book specifically about Morris the designer.Yet the author recognizes in its pages that for Morris, art, poetry, architecture, social justice, the making of things both useful and beautiful, were inseparable parts of a great whole. It was in the light of this conception, which had
deepened and broadened throughout his life, that all his work was carried on.
The 91 illustrations (26 in colour) cover
every aspect of Morris's output as a designer, ranging from the new type faces of the famous Kelmscott Press to his designs for fabrics and stained glass. This
stimulating survey will be of interest to both student and professional designers,as
well as to the layman who wishes to improve his acquaintance with the most important single figure in the field of 20thC design.
Ray Watkinson studied engraving at Manchester School of Art in the 'thirties,
and in forty-odd years of working life has
been illustrator, designer, engineering draughtsman, journalist and art critic. He has taught the history and practice of art
and design in a number of places - Manchester, Poole, Watford, the City of London Polytechnic, the London College of Printing: when this book was first written (1966-7) he was Senior Lecturer in the History of Art in Brighton Polytechnic.
