Card measures 5 1/8" x 3"; paper measures 7 1/4" x 10." Card reads: "James C. Watson, Director of the Observatory Ann Arbor, July 25, 1879." James Craig Watson (1838-1880) was a Canadian American astronomer who taught at the University of Michigan as a professor of physics, astronomy, and mathematics and was the director of the Ann Arbor Observatory. He discovered twenty-two asteroids and other celestial objects such as comets and minor planets. Watson also took part in several expeditions for astronomical observations, including a solar eclipse in Sicily and the transit of Venus in China. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Association and was given the Lalande Prize in 1869 by the French Academy of Sciences for his achievements in astronomy..
