WATTEAU, Jean Antoine : La Tourilere Comedien

305 x 220 mm., etching with one small rust mark lower centre otherwise in very good condition.

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a noted French artist renowned for bringing renewed energy to the Baroque style. The engraver was Claude Du Bosc (1682-1746). The example in the Beard collection does not give a place of publication but may well be assumed to be London. Du Bosc is recorded as having moved to London with Claude Dupuis to help in engraving the Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court. He was to remain and set up business in his own name after the project was finished. V & A Harry Beard Collection (S.5141-2009).
