Publisher's original black+red marbled cloth bds with dulled,oxidised, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip which is also slightly darkened.Negligible shelf-wear to edges,corners minimally bumped,head+foot of spine/backstrip also minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing.Vertical edges of both front+rear bds minimally water-stain affected with some minimal,inevitable bleeding to both pastedowns,both of which are minimally grubbed.Top edge dust-soiled and aged/ darkened - as usual/normal; fore-edge less so and therefore slightly cleaner; contents bright,tight and clean,some minimal foxing to prelims - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.A solid,sound,copy of an uncommon edition. It was clearly going to be a bad crossing. [First lines . . . .] Set in London in the years leading up to the First World War,'Vie Bodies.' is a satirical novel about the capricious and vacuous Bright Young Things of Mayfair.The main character,Adam Fenwick-Symes, returning to England having completed his autobiography,has his manuscript burnt by a Customs Officer who declares it his duty to destroy filth.With nothing to publish, Adam is left penniless and his fiancee decides to marry Ginger,a man with fair hair and plenty of money. And presently,like a circling typhoon,the sounds of battle began to return.[. . . . last words.] In a preface to the 1965 Uniform Edition of 'Vile Bodies',Waugh said that it was distinguished only for being "the first novel in which dialogue on the telephone plays a large part." A successor if not exactly a sequel to 'Decline and Fall',it was also the book with which Waugh secured his popularity. The novel's protagonist is Adam Fenwick-Symes,one of the Bright Young People, though on the periphery of the set.Adam is engaged to Nina Blount,but has to call off his engagement when the manuscript of his memoirs,on which his "whole livelihood depends," is burned by a customs official whose "livelihood depends on stopping orks like this coming into the country." In 'Vile Bodies',the very modern - the Bright Young People themselves,telephones, fast cars,zeppelins - coexists uneasily with the more traditional demands of Church and State.
