A 'Subscriber's Copy,' it is signed by Webster on a tipped-in leaf in Vol. 1. Frontis. portraits in Vols. 1 & 2. Six octavo volumes. Publisher's binding of brown cloth, gilt title at spine, blocked in blind on sides, pale yellow endpapers. There is a bit of faint dampstaining to a couple of volumes and nicks and chips to the crowns of the spines. Webster (1782-1852), a lawyer, politician, and renowned orator, posssessed more knowledge of American financial and constitutional subjects than any other statesman of his day. Specific topics examined in this set are: Currency; Banking; the Bank of the United States; Tariff; Sub-Treasury system; the Deposit question; Surplus revenue; Bankruptcy question; Public lands; Nature of the Constitution; Powers of the President; Slavery; and Foreign relations.
