Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional - especially the dw/dj,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/ state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s 40-year-old age. It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading for the book. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness and an essential addition to any Fay Weldon collection.
Ruth had never thought of herself as a she-devil.Rather the opposite,in fact: a lumbering, clumsy woman, over six foot in height, with a jutting jaw topped by sprouting moles; a hum-drum wife and mother of two, living in a quiet respectable suburb of a large town, doing her best to get through each passing day.Not much room for devilry there.
Or so Ruth thinks. But when her husband reveals that he is conducting a passionate affair with Mary Fisher, the young millionairess creator of countless best-selling romantic novels, beautiful, successful and available,Ruth has a tantrum.Which is when her husband calls her a 'she-devil'.And for the first time Ruth begins to wonder if that might not be such a bad description after all.
Suffice it to say that within weeks Ruth has burnt the family house to ashes, robbing her husband of any insurance claim; made wild love to the suburb's local drunk and 'flasher'; and upped sticks to set out on a personal voyage of revenge and reformation to end in a climax at once foreseeable and totally deserved.
'THE LIFE AND LOVES OF A SHE-DEVIL' is Fay Weldon's blackest comedy of manners yet,one in which the customary war between man and woman is treated in a totally original way.At times fantastical, moving, bitterly satiric and frequently very funny,Mrs Weldon's new book marks yet another impressive development in the work of one of our most gifted novelists.
