No date, circa 1929. 5" x 7 1/4." 125 unnumbered pages, complete. 104 black and white plates, complete. Former ownership inscription written in black ink on front free endpaper: "To Uncle Bish, from, Bill, Christmas 1931." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. A Fine copy. Harry Laurenz Wells (1854-1940) was an American author, poet, and editor. In addition to poems and prose, Wells also wrote on topical subjects such as local histories of the West Coast. Most of the book is a visual tour expressed through the plates with their accompanying captions, although there are excerpts on the landing of the Spanish explorers in California and how the state got its name; California missions; and California's mountains, forests, and lakes. The tour begins in southern California, progresses to Monterey and the central coast, and finally concludes in northern California.
