No date, circa 1898, 48pp, heavy textured cream cloth with gilt lettering and gilt and purple flower decoration at cover, soiling at edges, quarter-inch chip at spine tail, long gift inscription at front end-paper, in very scarce, plain, off-white paper dust jacket with black lettering at front panel, and ads at rear flap, minor chipping at edges, moderate to heavy soiling, now housed in protective Brodart. Miss Toosey's mission was to convert "heathen African natives" to Christianity. Originally published in 1878, this was apparently the author's first novel. The present edition is not dated, but the gift inscription notes 1898. The author, b. 1844, d. 1929, was an English writer of children's stories. Her novels were published anonymously until 1903, including the present title, which is noted only as by the author of Laddie. Her writing style was praised as 'a study in English for its conciseness, simplicity, and elegance,' and her writing described as charming, pure and wholesome.
