Signed by Whittaker in blue pen to the right as "James Whitaker." No date, circa 1960s-1970s. 8" x 10." Former owner's inscription in blue ink on back briefly describing Whittaker. Photograph is pristine and intact except for a small mark on back. A Fine copy. James "Jim" W. Whittaker (b. 1929) is an American mountaineer. On May 1, 1963, he became the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest with the American Mountain Everest Expedition as led by Norman Dyhrenfurth and guided by Sherpa Nawang Gombu (Gombu was the nephew of Tenzing Norgay, the first Sherpa to summit Mt. Everest with Edmund Hillary). Whittaker was awarded the Hubbard Medal by President John F. Kennedy for this successful feat. In 1965, Whittaker was part of an expedition that helped Robert F. Kennedy climb the newly-named Mount Kennedy in Kluane National Park, Canada. He and Robert became close friends.
